Never Assume - Flooding And Your Insurance....

I have long preached the gospel of water damage, pontificating that flooding can and does happen anywhere and at any time.  Floods are the single most common natural disaster in the US, occurring in all fifty states, and causing billions of dollars in damage to life and property every year.

It can even happen in the mile high city of Denver Colorado, where recent torrential rains have resulted in flood damage to several areas of the city.  Downed trees, power lines,  and damaged homes and vehicles are making for restoration amounts totaling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Unfortunately, far too many people make the wrong assumptions when it comes to flood damage and their insurance, assumptions that can come back to haunt them later on.

Basic homeowners’ insurance policies, the kind most people opt for, do not cover structural flood damage or damage to any belongings as a result.  If you are in an apartment or renting a house, the same applies to renter’s insurance.  Additional coverage must be purchased to protect these items, something most consumers are not readily aware of.

Flood damage insurance coverage should be purchased before flood damage occurs.  In addition, there is a thirty day waiting period before flood coverage kicks in, so it is advisable to go ahead and secure the right policy now.  Claims on flooding insurance will also have an effect on future insurance rates.

Flood damage to vehicles, on the other hand, may very well be covered by your comprehensive policy, however in some states this is still optional so check your policy now to verify what is and isn’t covered.  Make adjustments accordingly.

Unfortunately, the nation’s economic woes have forced many folks to cut back on expenditures, including those for proper insurance coverage for their homes and belongings, and when mother nature turns malevolent, as we saw this week in Denver, the results can be…..unfortunate.

Often times saving money in the short term is not the ideal solution.  None of us really think about our insurance policies until we have to make use of them, and the last thing any of us need in the current economy is a rude financial awakening.

Of course, as with any disaster, there is never a shortage of scammers and con artists who specialize in parting people from their money.  Never do business with any one or any company until you can verify that their credentials are legit.  It is almost impossible to track down a scammer once he has your money, so you should assume that any money lost in such transactions is long gone.
