Rock Hil Victims' Shelter Damaged By Sewage...

Safe Passage, a Rock Hill SC based assistance program helping victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault victims was severely damaged by flooding this week, as the building’s sewer system backed up, causing considerable overflow back through the toilets throughout the facility.  The director of Safe Passage described the damage as “devastating”.

Apparently a backup valve somewhere in the system imploded, causing major backup in the system with nowhere for it to go but back up through the toilets.  Four offices were damaged, along with the children’s play area, food pantry, clothing closet, and the basement where clothing donations were stored.  Cleanup crews have been on scene and the process is continuing.

Damage to the facility is expected to total more than $30,000, with furniture, flooring, and carpet needing to be replaced.  In addition, thousands of dollars’ worth of clothing donations were ruined as a result of the water damage and will have to be thrown out.

Those donations were intended to provide clothing, household items, and other additional aid for adults and children who have been the victims of sexual assault or domestic violence.

Employees who showed up for work last Wednesday noticed a horrible smell on the premises, along with shreds of toilet paper scattered throughout the building.  At first they thought the building had been vandalized.

Due to the amount of cleanup and restoration that will be required, Safe passage will be unable to accept new donations until the end of August, and quite possible not until early September.   They are asking the public to provide donations in the form of gift cards or cash donations, allowing them to provide some measure of assistance to those in need.

Of course, sewage backup is the worst form of water damage that any property can experience.  Unlike “normal” water damage, which can cause significant problems all its own, sewage backup introduces dangerous bacteria, parasites, and viruses into the mix, drastically increasing the threat to one’s health.  It is highly recommended that trained professionals be brought in to deal with such a problem.
