A Step Of Faith....

As the flood damage clean up continues in Minot ND, Sunday found churches picking through the debris, mud, and sludge (and no doubt singing “Higher Ground”) as members attempted to salvage whatever they could from their respective houses of worship.

Christ Lutheran Church was one of the most heavily damaged, requiring pews be chain sawed into pieces and removed from the sanctuary.  The church is going to have to be almost completely gutted in order for proper repairs to be affected.

"It’s heart breaking," said Inez Nathan, a Minot resident since 1960. Currently the church is meeting at an alternate location until repairs can be completed.

The fifty year old church has been in a flood zone for much of its existence, so the threat of floods was nothing new, but with recent severe weather, the flood water pouring in from Canada was simply going to be too much to try to stand and fight.  The church made the painful decision to pack up what they could, say a prayer, and let the church face the threat head on.

One church member commented on the level of damage, pointing to the one flower that had survived and even bloomed amidst the carnage.  Inez Nathan says that sparkle of life is bringing hope to church members and assurance that they will survive this.

The flooding in Minot has been just a small part of record flooding across the Midwest this year, causing billions of dollars in damage to life and property.

It also serves to reinforce the fact that floods can occur anywhere, and at any time, and anyone can be a victim (unless of course for that one small percentage whose vacation homes are located on the top of Everest or Pike’s peak or something).  It becomes important to be aware of the potential problem and be ready to deal with it when your turn in the barrel comes up.

Floods are one of the most dangerous and destructive natural disasters that can affect a home or business.    Flood waters cause tremendous levels of damage, and are perfectly capable of shifting a structure on its foundation, making it prone to collapse.  Add to that the damage done to furniture and other valuables, compounded with the amount of mud, silt, and other debris that may be left behind…..the clean up process following a flood is a daunting one to say the least.
